6 Days Umbwe Route

Mount Kilimanjaro, Tanzania

Trip Overview

The 6 Days Umbwe Route is a lesser-known track that warrants attention. Previously, it was regarded as a challenging path. While the first two days are more difficult, the route is still manageable for most hikers. It begins on the southern slope of Mount Kilimanjaro and connects with the Lemosho and Machame routes on the third day before the Barranco Wall. 6 Days Umbwe Route is distinguished by the fact that you will see very few other trekkers over the first two days. It is available in six and seven-day itineraries, with the seven-day version being advised for newcomers who have not acclimatized previously. Overall, it’s a picturesque path that will allow you to see some of the greatest vistas on Kilimanjaro cross all of the mountain’s climate zones, and observe its unique plants and animals.

Tour Plan

Driving from Moshi to the Kilimanjaro National Park gate. We will calmly wait for our licenses to be approved while observing the hustle and bustle of activities as several teams prepare for the voyage ahead. Enjoy the stunning rainforest landscape and winding pathways as your guide educates you on the area's flora and animals, as well as natural creatures. At lower levels, the route can be muddy and treacherous. We strongly suggest gaiters and walking poles here. The trail ascends through dense montane forest, along a ridge between two deep valleys. The camp is situated between massive trees and dense foliage.

Elevation ranges from 1651m/5417ft to 2944m/9659ft, with an altitude rise of 1293m.

After breakfast, we proceed up a high slope of the hazardous Barranco Wall to the Karanga Valley and the intersection with the Mweka Trail. This is one of the most spectacular days to witness your crew's power, agility, and strength as they jet over this wall with apparent ease. Overnight in the Karanga Camp.

Elevation: 3986m (13,077ft) to 4034m (13,235ft)
Altitude gain: 48m

Elevation: 3986m (13,077ft) to 4034m (13,235ft)
Altitude gain: 48m

We continue up toward Barafu Camp, and once there, you have finished the South Circuit, which provides amazing views of the peak from all viewpoints. We'll have an early meal and get some rest before summit night. Overnight in the Barafu Camp.

Elevation ranges from 4034m/13,235ft to 4662m/15,295ft, with an altitude gain of 628m.

Excitement grows as daylight approaches with an early start between midnight and 2 a.m. This is the most psychologically and physically hard part of the journey.

We continue our journey to the summit between the Rebmann and Ratzel glaciers, striving to keep warm and focused on the incredible sense of success that awaits us. With a switchback motion in a northwesterly direction, rise across hard scree towards Stella Point on the crater rim. During your brief stay here, you will be rewarded with a breathtaking dawn. Faster hikers may see the dawn from the summit. The last one-hour trek to Uhuru Peak is expected to be snowy.

Congratulations, one step at a time, you have now reached Uhuru Peak, the highest peak on Mount Kilimanjaro and the continent of Africa!

After photographs, celebrations, and even a few tears of pleasure, we take time to appreciate this wonderful accomplishment. We continue our long descent to Mweka Camp, pausing at Barafu for lunch and a little respite. We strongly advise using gaiters and walking poles in difficult loose gravel and volcano ash terrain. A well-deserved relaxation awaits you as you spend your final evening on the mountain. Overnight stay at Mweka Camp.

Elevation: 4662m/15,295ft to 5895m/19,341ft
Altitude gain: 1233m
Descent to 3106m/10,190ft
Altitude lost: 2789m

After breakfast and a touching ritual of gratitude and team bonding with your crew, it's time to say farewell. We proceed down to the Mweka Park Gate to get your summit certificates. Because the weather is significantly warmer, the terrain is damp, muddy, and steep, and we strongly advise Gaiters and trekking poles.

A van will meet you in Mweka village and transport you back to your accommodation in Moshi (approximately 30 minutes). Enjoy a long-awaited hot shower, food, and celebration!!

Overnight at The Maridadi Hotel B&B before being moved to your next destination, whether it's home, safari, or a leisurely trip to Zanzibar.

Elevation: 3106m/10,190ft to 1633m/5358ft
Altitude loss: 1473m
